70th anniversary of UN Day

On 24 October 2015, UN Day, The United Nations celebrated its 70th anniversary. To mark this very special occasion, a concert featuring the Korean Broadcasting System Traditional Music Orchestra was held in the General Assembly Hall, on Friday 23 October. The orchestra performed a rich array of musical pieces including the Korean folk song Arirang, which was registered by UNESCO on its “Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists” in 2012. Special guests performing with the orchestra included United Nations Messenger of Peace Lang Lang, Korean K-pop duo Davichi and the Harlem Gospel Choir. Providing a beautiful backdrop to the concert, the United Nations Headquarters was awash in blue as part of the “Turn the World UN Blue” campaign.

HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1950, the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V), inviting all States and interested organizations to observe 10 December of each year as Human Rights Day.

This year's Human Rights Day is devoted to the launch of a year-long campaign for the 50th anniversary of the two International Covenants on Human Rights: the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which were adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 16 December 1966.

The two Covenants, together with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, form the International Bill of Human Rights, setting out the civil, political, cultural, economic, and social rights that are the birth right of all human beings.

"Our Rights. Our Freedoms. Always." aims to promote and raise awareness of the two Covenants on their 50th anniversary. The year-long campaign revolves around the theme of rights and freedoms -- freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear -- which underpin the International Bill of Human Rights are as relevant today as they were when the Covenants were adopted 50 years ago.

From 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign is a time to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world. The international campaign originated from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute coordinated by the Center for Women's Global Leadership in 1991.

The year 2015 marks the 20-year anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most progressive road map to gender equality. World leaders met in March at the United Nations 59th Commission on the Status of Women and in September at the 70th General Assembly to take stock of the progress made and commit to take action to close the gaps that are holding women and girls back. This year a new Sustainable Development agenda, which for the first time includes specific targets and indicators on ending violence against women, also replaced the Millennium Development Goals.

The UNiTE Campaign launches ‘The brave are not violent’ initiative in Latin America and the Caribbean

On Wednesday 12 July, the UNiTE Campaign launched the initiative “The brave are not violent”, in Quito, Ecuador. The initiative is a joint communications campaign which is being launched by the UNiTE Campaign with support from UN Women, UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA, PAHO and WHO, in partnership with MTV. The regional launch follows national launches earlier this year in Cuba in April and Argentina in May.

The initiative aims to involve youth in the campaign, encouraging them to become part of the solution to prevent and end violence against women and girls. It calls on young people to take a stand against violence against women by carrying out simple actions in their day to day realities such as in their homes, schools and communities to challenge macho behavior and attitudes.

The launch event took the form of a party organized with the support of the Municipality of Quito, Ecuador. During the ceremony, the MTV DJ Mauricio Parra launched a contest asking young people in the region to submit proposals to contribute to preventing and ending violence against women in a range of fields, including sport, theatre, music and social media. The winning project will be highlighted in a profile of MTV Agents of Change.

The launch was attended by UN Women Director for the Americas and the Caribbean, Moni Pizani, who addressed young people "courage makes the impossible possible, and so we ask you: show us your bravery, be our agents of change, help us to change those terrifying statistics of the thousands of women and girls victims of violence," she said.

UNICEF Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Bernt Aasen, stressed that to end violence against women, not only does the current generation of men and women need to be reached, but also children and adolescents. "To prevent and eliminate such violence requires involving men from childhood to change their perceptions and stereotypes," he said.  He supported the idea that "young boys are essential so that girls and women can live in a world that guarantees them exercise of their rights without any discrimination."

The Regional Director of UNDP for Latin America and the Caribbean, Freddy Justiniano, also emphasized the role of youth when examining the current data in the region showing that levels of violence against women and girls are high in Latin America and the Caribbean. He told young people "We know it is you, the young men and women, who can make a radical change to this situation and build a nonviolent and egalitarian future society. The world has seen that you have the power to change society. And the region needs you”.

The Director of the Regional Office of UNFPA for Latin America and the Caribbean, Marcela Suazo, noted that "diverse international agreements, including the Programme of Action of the ICPD (1994) establish that preventing and addressing violence against women requires the participation of adult men, adolescents and children as allies in promoting individual and collective attitude changes, beliefs and behaviours that reinforce violence as an indicator of masculinity and sexual risk taking as an indicator of ‘manliness’.”

The Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Dr. Carissa F. Etienne, was also convinced that "the youth of our region and each one in particular, can play an essential role in the prevention and reduction of violence in all Member States".

Diskrimininasi Hak wanita dalam pekerjaan - gaji

Menurut statistik 2008 daripada Kementerian Sumber Manusia, lelaki berpangkat pegawai kanan dan pengurus berpendapatan gaji bulanan purata RM4,296, manakala wanita dalam kedudukan yang sama memperoleh hampir separuh jumlah itu, RM2,522.

Lelaki dalam kategori profesional memperoleh purata RM3,670, tetapi rakan perempuan memperoleh RM2,848.

Malah pekerja lelaki di "loji dan operator mesin serta pemasangan" memperoleh purata RM860 berbanding gaji purata rakan perempuan mereka iaitu RM623.

"Di semua pekerjaan formal, lelaki memperoleh lebih banyak wang daripada wanita ... ini jelas diskriminasi gaji atas dasar jantina tetapi dirasionalkan sebagai kelayakan rendah bagi wanita," menurut laporan itu.

Perbezaan gaji antara lelaki dan wanita lebih besar dalam pekerjaan peringkat tinggi, seperti kategori profesional, berbanding pekerjaan berpendapatan rendah seperti pekerja kraf dan perkhidmatan.

"Penemuan ini menunjukkan kapasiti mobiliti untuk merapatkan jurang pendapatan adalah terhad dan mungkin secara sistematik terhalang, paling jelas dalam jawatan profesional," katanya.

Comment: Perkara 23 dalam Universal Declaration of Human Rights mengatakan bahawa semua orang mempunyai hak untuk bekerja, memilih pekerjaan, keadaan bekerja yang baik dan perlindungan daripada pengangguran. Selain itu, semua orang, tanpa sebarang diskriminasi, berhak untuk penggajian yang sama bagi kerja yang sama. Oleh itu, tidak sepatutnya berlaku issue tersebut kerana bukan sahaja melanggari hak wanita tetapi juga hak pekerja serta hak asasi manusia.

Dedication to girls

1. Not every girl wants to get married by 23. So before you ASSUME she's of marriageable age, ask her what her views on marriage are. One hint, might save you the drama- just because she does not want to get married now does not mean she never will. She has other plans for herself right now, let her live a little.
2. Just because a girl wishes to do her PhD after Masters does not mean she doesn't want to settle down in life. Give her a break, and respect the fact that she has the confidence to take that up, cos yeah, PhD is no joke. There will come a point when she would happily devote herself to her family, and balance it out with her work life. Her degrees, or lack of them, won't make any difference. Let her study while she wants to, okay?
3. Just because she is 27 and unmarried does not mean she's been rejected by many men. Maybe, being single is a choice she has made.
4. Having a boyfriend does not make her characterless.
5. Just because she has recently gone through a break up doesn't mean she is vulnerable and available.
6. Just because most of her friends are boys, does not mean she is "having a good time" with all of them.
7. Just because she has a drink in her hand does not mean she is an alcoholic.
8. Just because she wore a short skirt to one party does not mean she dresses up that way every day.
9. Just because she is ambitious doesn't mean she isn't a family person.
10. Just because she doesn't discuss her plans doesn't mean she's clueless about life. Give her a chance, alright?
11. Just because she is outspoken doesn't mean she is a rebel.
12. Just because she comes home late from work does not mean she is sleeping around with her colleagues.
13. After a hectic week, give her some time to relax over the weekend. Don't make that one weekend party make her look like a she's a frivolous party-girl without a job.
14. Just because she is out shopping alone does not mean she is depressed or lonely. It's how she relaxes, respect that.
15. Just because she is on a holiday alone does not mean she doesn't have company. Maybe it's a break to get back her lost confidence, or maybe that's how she is. Admire her spirit instead of giving her advice, okay?
16. Just because she is a woman doesn't mean she can't kick ass in military school.
17. Just because she has a tattoo doesn't mean she is attention seeking. Maybe that's her way of expression.
18. Just because she doesn't know how to cook doesn't mean she won't make a good wife. Remember when you were just married and cooked chicken curry which was um, a disaster?
19. Just because she likes everything pink and shiny and fluffy doesn't mean she lives in her own world. She can handle some situations much better than her male counterparts.
20. Just because she is pretty does not mean she is a whore. And just because she is friendly does not mean she is flirting with you.
Yes, we cry, we are emotional; we take things personally, and sometimes over-react to situations. But this does not give any one the right to judge us in the wrong way. Times are changing; don't confine her within those boundaries, no matter how orthodox you are. There are some who might be fighting this losing battle, yet compromising on their decisions and plans, just to please society. Respect n do share the spirit=)

Cyrus Cylinder - Cyrus, The Great

"...I am Cyrus. King of the world. In my human rights classes, Chapter 6 Cyrus The Great (580-529BC) brought up my attention to seek further research on the historical moment of Cyrus. Lets talk about the Cyrus cylinder

One of the few surviving sources of information that can be dated directly to Cyrus's time is the Cyrus cylinder, a document in the form of a clay cylinder inscribed in Akkadian cuneiform. It had been placed in the foundations of the Esagila (the temple of Marduk in Babylon) as a foundation deposit following the Persian conquest in 539 BC. It was discovered in 1879 and is kept today in the British Museum in London.

The text of the cylinder denounces the deposed Babylonian king Nabonidus as impious and portrays Cyrus as pleasing to the chief god Marduk. It goes on to describe how Cyrus had improved the lives of the citizens of Babylonia, repatriated displaced peoples and restored temples and cult sanctuaries. Although not mentioned in the text, the repatriation of the Jews from their "Babylonian captivity" has been interpreted as part of this policy.

In the 1970s the Shah of Iran adopted the Cyrus cylinder as a political symbol, using it "as a central image in his celebration of 2500 years of Iranian monarchy." and asserting that it was "the first human rights charter in history". This view has been disputed by some as "rather anachronistic" and tendentious, as the modern concept of human rights would have been quite alien to Cyrus's contemporaries and is not mentioned by the cylinder. The cylinder has, nonetheless, become seen as part of Iran's cultural identity.

The United Nations has declared the relic to be an "ancient declaration of human rights" since 1971, approved by then Secretary General Sithu U Thant, after he "was given a replica by the sister of the Shah of Iran".The British Museum describes the cylinder as "an instrument of ancient Mesopotamian propaganda" that "reflects a long tradition in Mesopotamia where, from as early as the third millennium BC, kings began their reigns with declarations of reforms." The cylinder emphasizes Cyrus's continuity with previous Babylonian rulers, asserting his virtue as a traditional Babylonian king while denigrating his predecessor.

Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum, has stated that the cylinder was "the first attempt we know about running a society, a state with different nationalities and faiths — a new kind of statecraft." He explained that "It has even been described as the first declaration of human rights, and while this was never the intention of the document -- the modern concept of human rights scarcely existed in the ancient world -- it has come to embody the hopes and aspirations of many."

My point of view for the previous song "TRY" by Colbie Caillat (women equality)

Initially, it was one of my tasks in English class assignment to analyze the lyrics of a song. So after discuss with my group, we decided to pick the song that previously I shared which is quite meaningful. After that I realize that this task can be shared here to highlight about women equality. So, sit down and take your time to read the analysis that I written about this song. First stanza portrayed the common perception among the young teenage girls in emphasizing one's physical appearance to impress the society and even overdoing it. A lot of them in a very young age putting thick makeup or undergo extreme exercise for sake of beauty. This had created the lack of self-confidence in them. So he/she is questioning whether all these will work to impress each and everyone in the society and bringing good views about us.

Second stanza illustrated young girls want to fit in the society to get the attentions by be sexy and misunderstood that sexy is the only way to show beauty. However again he/she questions: do you like you? This means: are we enjoy being someone who we are not, just to follow the point of view of somebody else?

Third stanza showed he/she is trying to tell all the young girls out there that they do not need to spend so much time to be someone that doesn't show who we truly are in order to impress the crowd. Natural is the most unique beauty of all time. He/she is also trying to underline the importance to be comfortable and proud of who we are, fighting all the negative comments confidently.

This stanza portrayed again the common things that a young girl did to be perfect in physical outlook by spending a fortune on clothing and accessories. He/she asked the reason why overly care about someone else judgments when they themselves are the only one who knows what best or bad to them.

Evidently, the chorus is mainly all about embracing young girls' confidence and giving a strong message to society not to judge a person based on outlook and even critique without knowing that person. This video helps to stop social issues like disorder eating and suicide cases in teenagers.

Hari Perempuan / Wanita Internasional

Hari Perempuan Nasional dirayakan pada tanggal 8 Maret setiap tahun. Ini adalah sebuah hari besar yang dirayakan di seluruh dunia untuk memperingati keberhasilan kaum perempuan di bidang ekonomi, politik dan sosial. Di antara peristiwa-peristiwa historis yang terkait lainnya, perayaan ini memperingati kebakaran Pabrik Triangle Shirtwaist di New York pada 1911 yang mengakibatkan 140 orang perempuan kehilangan nyawanya.
Gagasan tentang perayaan ini pertama kali dikemukakan pada saat memasuki abad ke-20 di tengah-tengah gelombang industrialisasi dan ekspansi ekonomi yang menyebabkan timbulnya protes-protes mengenai kondisi kerja. Kaum perempuan dari pabrik pakaian dan tekstil mengadakan protes pada 8 Maret 1857 di New York. Para buruh garmen memprotes apa yang mereka rasakan sebagai kondisi kerja yang sangat buruk dan tingkat gaji yang rendah. Para pengunjuk rasa diserang dan dibubarkan oleh polisi. Kaum perempuan ini membentuk serikat buruh mereka pada bulan yang sama dua tahun kemudian.
Di Barat, Hari Perempuan Internasional dirayakan pada tahun sekitar tahun 1910-an dan 1920-an, tetapi kemudian menghilang. Perayaan ini dihidupkan kembali dengan bangkitnya feminisme pada tahun 1960-an. Pada tahun 1975, PBB mulai mensponsori Hari Perempuan Internasional.

Dari video yang terjumpa di youtube, kita boleh menyampaikan mesej " girls power " melalui lagu moden dan video terhadap generasi muda secara berkesan. Hal ini kerana ceramah dan kempen tidak dapat menimbulkan minat dalam kalangan pemuda kerana mereka mempunyai persepsi bosan terhadap program tersebut. Pemuda-pemuda yang merupakan bakal pemimpin masyarakat sepatutnya difokus dalam kepentingan menghormati hak asasi wanita kerana bak kata pepatah: melentur buluh biarlah dari rebungnya. Oleh itu, marilah kita menyemarakan "girls power" dan rasa bangga diri sebagai seorang wanita=)

Pengenalan terhadap hak asasi manusia

Sebelum kita membincangkan tentang hak asasi wanita, kita harus memahami erti hak asasi manusia. Istilah hak memiliki banyak erti. Hak dapat diertikan sebagai sesuatu yang benar, kewenangan, kekuasaan untuk berbuat sesuatu, atau kekuasaan yang benar atas sesuatu atau untuk menuntut sesuatu. Sedangkan asasi bererti bersifat dasar, pokok, fundamental. Hak asasi manusia pula bermaksud hak yang bersifat dasar atau hak pokok yang dimiliki oleh manusia, seperti hak hidup, hak berbicara dan hak mendapat perlindungan. Oleh sebab sifatnya yang dasar dan pokok ini, maka hak asasi manusia sering dianggap sebagai hak yang tidak dapat dicabut atau dihilangkan. Dengan kata lain, hak asasi manusia perlu mendapat jaminan oleh negara atau pemerintah, maka siapa saja yang melanggarnya.

Hak Asasi Manusia adalah seperangkat hak yang melekat pada hakikat dan keberadaan manusia sebagai makhluk Tuhan Yang Maha Kuasa dan merupakan anugerah-Nya yang wajib dihormati, dijunjung tinggi dan dilindungi oleh negara, hukum, Pemerintah dan setiap orang, demi kehormatan serta perlindungan harkat dan martabat manusia (Pasal 1 ayat 1 UU No. 39 Tahun 1999 tentang HAM dan UU No. 26 Tahun 2000 tentang Pengadilan HAM).

Bagi orang yang beragama dan meyakini bahwa manusia adalah ciptaan Tuhan, maka hak asasi manusia adalah hak yang melekat pada diri manusia dan merupakan hak yang diberikan sebagai kurnia Tuhan. Semua hak asasi manusia itu berasal dari Tuhan, maka tidak diperbolehkan ada pihak lain termasuk manusia kecuali Tuhan sendiri yang mencabutnya. UU RI No. 39 tahun  1999 tentang hak asasi manusia merumuskan bahwa hak asasi manusia adalah seperangkat hak yang melekat pada hakikat dan keberadaan manusia sebagai makhluk Tuhan Yang Maha Esa dan merupakan anugerah-Nya yang wajib dihormati, dijunjung tinggi dan dilindungi oleh negara, hukum dan pemerintah, dan setiap orang demi kehormatan serta perlindungan harkat dan martabat manusia.

Pada umumnya, ada sejumlah hak yang tidak dapat dicabut atau dihilangkan, seperti kebebasan berbicara dan berpendapat, kebebasan beragama dan berkeyakinan, kebebasan berserikat, dan hak untuk mendapatkan perlindungan yang sama di depan hukum.Pengingkaran terhadap hak asasi manusia berarti mengingkari martabat kemanusiaan. Oleh kerana itu, negara, hukum, pemerintah dan setiap orang mengemban kewajiban untuk mengakui dan melindungi hak asasi manusia pada setiap manusia tanpa kecuali. Ini bererti bahwa hak asasi manusia harus selalu menjadi titik tolak dan tujuan dalam penyelenggaraan kehidupan bermasyarakat, berbangsa dan bernegara.
